Lyrics To All Songs On The Album: Old Kentucky

Who I Am

Jon Sizemore

I’ve walked a thousand miles in the dark

With an aching in my heart

Cursing the dust in the air

Praying I make it out of there

And I’ve watched a mountain fall at my feet

Cause I chopped it down at the knees

(Chorus)

I’m not scared of where I’m going

Because of where I’ve been

All these scares and bones I’ve broken

Made me who I am

Well I’ve felt that flame so many times

When I get burned I don’t blink my eyes

And I’ve been left out in the cold

Soaking wet with nowhere to go

And when I’m called on home

I wear my crown of sticks and stones

(Chorus)

I’m not scared of where I’m going

Because of where I’ve been

All these scares and bones I’ve broken

Made me who I am

Made me who I am

Angels Heart

Jon Sizemore

I said Lord please help me find my way

As the sun came through the windshield of my Chevrolet

Three days are gone and how the hell did I get here

I threw the bottle in my hand and I shed a tear

Cause there’s a note on the dashboard telling me farewell

When you get home I’ll be long gone and you can go to hell

(Chorus)

I guess that’s where I was headed anyway

Well I’ve been there a time or two but I don’t want to stay

I said Lord please help me find my way

So I can make back in time to ask her to stay

But your lights shining bright on me but I’m still in the dark

How can you get to heaven when you’ve broke an angels heart

I said Lord please help me find my way

You sent me an angel and I drove her away

I don’t see why she stuck it out so long

And I can’t seem to find no right in all this wrong

And there’s a note on the dashboard telling me farewell

When you get home I’ll be long gone and you can go to hell

(Chorus)

I guess that’s where I was headed anyway

Well I’ve been there a time or two but I don’t want to stay

I said Lord please help me find my way

So I can make back in time to ask her to stay

But your lights shining bright on me but I’m still in the dark

How can you get to heaven when you’ve broke an angels heart

An angels heart

Welfare Blues

Jon Sizemore

Well it’s a long way outta the holler ain’t got a dollar in my name

That old rooster’s crowing at midnight he’s driving me insane

My woman’s talking in my left ear it’s just going out the right

And I’m just starring out the window at nothing but the night

(Chorus)

At the first of the month I start a howling towards the end I don’t what to do

I’ve been drinking homemade wine by the gallon

I got these damned old welfare blues

Well my neighbor works in the coal mines and I hang out at the house

I get outta bed at his lunchtime wilder than hell when he gets out

And he works his self to death so he can drive a fancy truck

And he thinks I’m lazy but I don’t give a

(Chorus)

At the first of the month I start a howling towards the end I don’t know what to do

I’ve been drinking homemade wine by the gallon

I got these damned old welfare blues

Well I’ve got these damned old welfare blues

American Man

Eddie Fee, Jon Sizemore

Born on a cabin floor before the war

In eastern Kentucky on a winter night

He lost his old man when he was nine years old

Became a man himself before it was time

His baby brother turned eighteen in forty-one

He got a letter that said he had to go

But Uncle Sam want take all of a mother’s sons

So he walked down to the court house through the snow

(Chorus)

And he said take me I’m the one you want

I’m the one that don’t give a damn

To fight like hell until my last shell

So give me all you can

I’d do whatever it takes to defend this land

Oh before you I stand an American man

Years passed by in the blink of an eye

And you can’t turn back those hands of time

He left his mark on this Earth

He left us all with a little peace of mind

(Chorus)

And he said take me I’m the one you want

I’m the one that don’t give a damn

To fight like hell until my last shell

So give me all you can

I’d do whatever it takes to defend this land

Oh before you I stand an American man

I’ll Be There

Jon Sizemore

Don’t be a sinking ship never to be found

Don’t be a falling star that can’t find the ground

And every road you travel down lead nowhere

And even thunder makes no sound I’ll be there

(Chorus)

I’ll be there for you I swear till my last breath

And I’ll be there for you I swear even after that

This world will beat you like a drum with a cold dark beat

But son I’ll pull off the ground put you back on your feet oh yeah

Don’t be a dark cloud on a sunny day

Things are looking up don’t look away

Always run against the wind with all your might

Don’t let the darkness creep on in through the light

(Chorus)

I’ll be there for you I swear till my last breath

And I’ll be there for you I swear even after that

This world will beat you like a drum with a cold dark beat

But son I’ll pull off the ground put you back on your feet oh yeah

Midnight Rain

Jon Sizemore

When the darkness is all you see

And you can’t find what you need

The world around you is caving in

Can’t tell your enemies from your friends

(Chorus)

Midnight rain can break all these rusty chains

That wrap around your heart and lead you home through the dark

Midnight rain can wash away all your pain

And lead you to a brand new start ohh

Don’t give up without a fight

You’re fighting for more than your life

For forty days and forty nights

It came down to spare no life

(Chorus)

Midnight rain can break all these rusty chains

That wrap around your heart and lead you home through the dark

Midnight rain can wash away all your pain

And lead you to a brand new start ohhh

It’s coming down, it’s coming down, it’s coming down, it’s pouring down

(Chorus)

Midnight rain can break all these rusty chains

That wrap around your heart and lead you home through the dark

Midnight rain can wash away all your pain

And lead you to a brand new start ohhh

Kerosene

Jon Sizemore

Kerosene why do you haunt all my dreams

And burn’um down to a smolder in the rain

Kerosene don’t you think you’ve had enough of me

Cause I’ve sure had my fill of you

(Chorus)

Cause you ain’t done nothing but hold me down

And I can’t do nothing when you’re around

Going to break this bottle on the ground

But not till I drink the last drop down

Kerosene, Kerosene who the hell do you think you are

Trying to take control of me

Kerosene gonna throw you in the flames

If you don’t just let me be

(Chorus)

Cause you ain’t done nothing but hold me down

Tired of this suffering when you’re around

Going to break this bottle on the ground

But not till I drink the last drop down

Kerosene, Kerosene, Kerosene, Kerosene, Kerosene, Kerosene

All That Survived

Jon Sizemore

Well I went to the Hurricane Mine Memorial today

My mind went blank and time stood still and I went back to that day

Well I got home from work and sit down with a pounding in my brain

The phone rang out and I swear to God it had never rang that way

He said come back we need your help there’s been a explosion at the mine

The lights went out and the wind blew cold and a shiver ran down my spin

(Chorus)

Well thirty-eight lost their lives in a place darker than night

But they live on in our minds a mining hat on the wall ain’t all that survived

Well they sent me in to recover my friends we got’em out three or four at a time

And I thought I’d never see their face again but their always there when I close my eyes

So I set out to find another way to provide

I’m a coal miner in my heart and I’ll be one till the day that I die

(Chorus)

Well thirty-eight lost their lives in a place darker than night

But they live on in our minds a mining hat on the wall ain’t all that survived

Crazyern Hell

Jon Sizemore

I picked up my old buddy on the side of the road hadn’t seen him in a while

He didn’t look the same he was skin and bones had the same old crooked smile

He said I had me a Mountain Dew and set it down and lost it

But I don’t pay my taxes anyway and I know that it’s July but last night it frosted

And I’m headin’ down to the post office to get my pay

Well we pulled into the parking lot I said buddy you have a good one

He said I will but you know I ain’t that tame

And he got out and he took off a walking back up the road the way that we just came

(Chorus)

Well he’s crazyern hell what happen to

That good ole boy who used to smoke a little weed and shoot a lot of pool

Well dope don’t grow out of the ground no more and as far as I can tell

These days they say their snortin’ wasp’er spray and their all goin’ crazyern hell

Well I rolled up to the One Stop out running on fumes

But she was kickin gravels across the parking lot and didn’t have on no shoes

She had a Marlboro in her lip standing at the counter with the line backed up playing scratch offs

Some ole boy in hurry tried to go around her

She threw her Obama phone and kicked him in the balls

(Chorus)

Well she’s crazyern hell what happen to

That pretty girl that had all her teeth and went all way through school

Well dope don’t grow out of the ground no more and as far as I can tell

These days they say their snortin’ wasp’er spray and their all goin’ crazyern hell Yeah

Why Must You Roam

Jon Sizemore

Like a car that just won’t start like a scare cut deep in your heart

Like a whisper on the wind blowing somewhere that’s you’ve never been

Like a river running wild on the stones

Like a helpless child a thousand miles from home

Oh gypsy why must you roam

(Chorus)

You’ve got everything you ever need inside you

Don’t you get tired of calling nowhere home

Put down some roots in the ground that made you

Oh gypsy why must roam

Another empty town another silent sound another strangers face another unfamiliar place

If you don’t stop running you’ll always be gone

Don’t spend all your days on this Earth all alone

Oh gypsy why must you roam

(Chorus)

You’ve got everything you ever need inside you

Don’t you get tired of calling nowhere home

Put down some roots in the ground that made you

Oh gypsy why must roam Oh gypsy why must roam

Old Kentucky

Jon Sizemore

I’ve seen the sun sinking in the ocean felt the waves roll across my feet

And I’ve seen the stars shine bright in a painted desert sky

Been to California and everywhere else in between

(Chorus)

But I’m one of the chosen to be so lucky to be in Gods masterpiece

Cause these mountains here in old Kentucky beats all I’ve ever seen

When the fog lays low in the holler and the creek sings me a tune

It makes me feel like a million dollars if I never see another one Lord I’ve this heaven here

 (Chorus)

Cause I’m one of chosen to be so lucky to be in Gods masterpiece

Cause these mountains here in old Kentucky beats all I’ve ever seen

It’s where I lay my head at night it’s where I‘ve been all my life

I know it’s where I’ll always be until the end of the line till the end of time

Cause on a mountain is where they’ll bury me in old Kentucky
